School lice policies in the Seattle area, district by district

Will my child be sent home? Do they need to be nit-free? Do I have to bring them to the office? We read the published lice rules of 15 Seattle-area school districts and Washington's state guidance. Each row links to the district's own document.

The short version
What we found.
  • Washington's state guidance says don't send kids home early. The Department of Health's school guide (DOH 420-503) says students with live lice can stay in class, go home at the end of the day, and return once treatment has begun, nits and all. It also urges schools to drop “no-nit” rules.
  • Most districts follow it: Lake Washington, Issaquah, Renton, Highline, Shoreline, Edmonds and Auburn all keep the child in class until the end of the day, or longer.
  • Several want to see your child when they come back. Renton, Auburn and Tacoma ask an adult to bring the student to the office for a check. Lake Washington screens in the health room. Tahoma asks for proof of treatment.
  • Class-wide letters are mostly gone. Lake Washington, Northshore and Renton notify a class only when there are three or more cases. Issaquah, Shoreline and Edmonds don't send them for routine cases.
  • Seattle Public Schools has no district-wide lice policy. Individual school nurses set their own practice, so ask yours.

For parents
What this means for you.
  • Expect a call, not an emergency pickup, in most districts. Plan to treat that evening.
  • Budget ten minutes at the office the next morning in Renton, Auburn and Tacoma, where an adult brings the student in to be checked. In Tahoma, bring proof of treatment.
  • Don't wait for a class letter. Most districts only send one when several kids in a class have lice, so regular checks at home are your best early warning.
  • Policies change. We checked every source on October 16, 2026. Your school nurse always has the final word.
